The 8-Day Expedition Itinerary: Swakopmund to the Kunene Mouth
Day 1: Leaving Civilization Behind
Our convoy departs early from Swakopmund (Marked in Green on the map below), heading north into the raw landscapes of the Skeleton Coast National Park. After a final top-up of fuel and a quick stretch at Terrace Bay—our last connection to the grid—we venture deep into the wilderness to set up our first wild camp north of Möwe Bay.
Day 2 & 3: Shipwrecks, Ghost Mines, and Desert Wildlife
We track the rugged coastline, pausing to explore historic remains like the Ventura Bomber crash site of 1942. Turning into the Hoarusib and Khumib River beds, we enter the territory of Namibia's legendary desert-adapted elephants, brown hyenas, and rare desert lions. We’ll also stop at the abandoned Sarusa amethyst mine and Agate Mountain, camping under brilliant, unpolluted dark skies.
Day 4 & 5: Reaching the Kunene Mouth Border
Brace yourself for spectacular beach driving as we pass Angra Fria and the historic Dunedin Star shelter. By afternoon, we arrive at the Kunene Mouth delta, where the river carves through the desert into the ocean on the Angolan border. This oasis is home to Nile crocodiles and green turtles. We spend Day 5 entirely at leisure here—perfect for some beach fishing, photography, or relaxing around the duneside camp.
Day 6 & 7: The Great Dune Crossings to Hartmann Valley
The true 4x4 challenge begins as we deflate our tires and navigate massive desert dunes eastward. Dropping down steep slip-faces, we transition into the surreal, wide-open expanses of the Hartmann Valley and the stunning Puros canyon. We overnight at a community campsite equipped with welcoming hot showers.
Day 8: Puros River—Journey’s End (Marked in Red on the map below)
We escort our overlanding convoy safely to Puros, where you will head to Sesfontein to refuel and restock. From here, your group can easily transit back south toward the bakkie-friendly tracks of Damaraland or continue your Namibian holiday toward Etosha National Park.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: Preparation Checklist & What Is Not Included
Because we are traveling into one of the most isolated and untouched environments on earth, self-sufficiency is key. Please review this mandatory list of what you need to bring to keep your family comfortable and your vehicle moving.
⛺ 1. Personal & Camping Gear
While we provide communal cooking facilities and field bathrooms, each booking group must supply their own:
Complete Sleeping Gear: Your own tent, bedroll, ground sail, camping chairs, and any specialized gear to ensure your family's comfort.
Kitchenware: Personal cutlery and crockery.
Firewood: Two large bags of wood per vehicle to support our evening campfires.
Provisions: All beverages, snacks, and daily lunches (Breakfast and dinner are fully catered).
Waste Management: Strong, heavy-duty garbage bags (e.g., garden waste bags). Please note: This is a strict carry-in, carry-out eco-expedition; clients are required to transport their own garbage and waste out of the park.
Essentials: Personal items such as prescription medications, high-protection sunblock, flashlights, cameras, and extra batteries.
Bug Protection: Reliable insecticides and repellents (such as Doom and Peaceful Sleep).
💧 2. Water Requirements
Water is life in the Namib. Each vehicle must carry a dedicated supply:
Drinking Water: Sufficient clean drinking water strictly for your own consumption.
Shower Water: A minimum of 60 liters of water per vehicle dedicated to your camp showers.
Kitchen Water: 20 liters of high-quality, clean water to contribute to the communal kitchen for cooking.
💡 Pro-Tip: Even if your vehicle features an integrated on-board water tank, we highly recommend carrying an easily detachable 20L jerry can. This makes replenishing water from local communities significantly easier along the route.
🚗 3. Vehicle Preparedness & Safety
This is a challenging 4x4 expedition requiring a highly capable, mechanically sound vehicle.
Mechanical Fitness: Ensure your 4x4 has been completely serviced, oils checked, and diffs inspected before departure. A turbocharger or high-torque engine is highly recommended for tackling the massive dune fields!
Tires & Pressure: Bring your own 12V tire compressor and reliable pressure gauge. You must have at least one reliable spare tire (bringing a second spare is highly welcomed). Don't forget a tire patch kit/plugs to handle small desert thorns.
Recovery Points: Your vehicle must be fitted with robust, rated recovery points/hooks on both the front and the rear. Standard factory tie-down hooks are not sufficient.
Insurance Cover: It is compulsory to contact your vehicle insurance provider (such as TuffStuff, Outsurance, etc.) beforehand to verify cross-border cover and that your vehicle is fully covered for off-road expeditions within Namibia and the specific terrain of the Skeleton Coast Park.
Note on Breakdowns: While our expert crew carries extensive knowledge and recovery gear to assist with standard off-road driving obstacles on-site, any major mechanical breakdown requiring advanced recovery or low-bed transport out of the park will be handled at an additional cost.
